Hair Loss: What to eat to avoid it

What foods can help maintain hair health? Are there nutrients which can control hair loss? Find out all about them here.

If you are worried about your hair falling out, then the last thing you should do is worry, as this stress will only make the problem worse. If hair is falling into your hands in the shower due to a genetic condition, then there is very little you could do, but if this is not the case, then adopting a careful diet may help the situation. Here are some foods that have helped in the past to prevent hair loss.

1. Protein is productive

Hair is primarily made of the protein keratin and therefore it only makes sense to incorporate a lot of protein in your diet. On the other hand, this does not mean just eating a large steak every day. This is not only because you need to diversify what you eat but steak also contains high levels of fat that will increase testosterone levels, a factor that has been attributed to hair loss.

Instead, focus on lean proteins such as chicken, low-fat cheese, eggs, almonds, yoghurt, calf's liver, soy milk, tofu and fish; the latter of which has a wide array of health benefits going beyond just healthy hair.

2. Silica is safe

Your knowledge of silica may extend to just the little balls you get in new shoes, but if you are trying to prevent hair loss, it needs to be on the list. Silica is useful because it helps your body to absorb vitamins and minerals more efficiently. Silica can be found in bean sprouts, cucumber skin, potatoes, and red and green peppers. It is wise to eat all of these raw, rather than cooked, as you will be receiving more nutrients from them that way.

3. Iron is important

For healthy hair, your scalp needs a good blood supply, and this supply of oxygen can only be passed on to your scalp tissues if your blood haemoglobin is at a good level. As haemoglobin is mostly made from iron, you need to make sure you are getting a good supply in your diet. Eggs, dates, leafy vegetables, whole-grain cereals and liver are all great sources of iron, and if you fancy something sweet, dried fruits such as raisins or cherry juice should be on the menu. Furthermore, vitamin C allows the iron to be absorbed into the body more easily, so try and eat more oranges, lemons and strawberries.

4. Zinc is zeal

Zinc is useful in various bodily functions such as balancing hormones, reproducing cells and managing the glands that attach to your hair follicles, all of which will affect how your hair grows. Zinc-heavy foods such as red meat, poultry, mussels, shrimp, oysters and nuts are great. Do be wary though that too much zinc can also cause hair loss, so avoid taking supplements, instead just stick to these foods.

Generally, balancing your diet is the key to managing hair growth. Avoid fatty, spicy and sugary foods, and ensure that you are getting sufficient vitamins and nutrients. It's that simple.
